San Gimignano is probably one of the best known village in Tuscany, Italy. Its stunning skyline of towers evokes the image of medieval Tuscany more than any other village of the region. It's not by chance that San Gimignano was given the nickname of "Medieval Manhattan", thanks to the "torri" built by the feuding nobles of the twelth and thirteenth centuries.

Nowadays San Gimignano is a must for all those spending their holiday in Tuscany. The medieval village is the classic destination as a day trip from Florence or Siena. However, because of its strategic location in central Tuscany, San Gimignano is also a good excuse for a sightseeing tour even if you leave from the coast or from extrem north/south of the region.

History of San Gimignano, Italy
San Gimignano was probably founded by the Etruscans, whose local presence can be witnessed in the tombs found in the surrounding countryside. After the Etruscans, the town was later inhabited by the Romans. This Tuscan medieval treasure was given its present name in 450 from San Gimignano, a bishop of Modena, whose intervention saved the settlement from Attila the Hun's attacks. The first feudal castle was built in the tenth century, and was soon surrounded by a cluster of houses, becoming a free Comune in the twelth century. A further set of walls was built in the thirteenth century, when the population started to replace the old wooden houses with stone structures and the first of the famous towers.

Wealth increased during the Middle Ages, when San Gimignano's population of 15.000 people prospered as a result of its position close to the "Via Francigena", the ancient trade and pilgrimage route between Rome and Northern Europe.
