San Miniato is an old roman village that lies on a hill-top, more and less equidistant from Pisa and Florence. The little village is famous for its Truffle Festival, that is held every year during the last three weeks of November.
History of San Miniato, Italy
The little village of San Miniato has been exploited since the era of the imperor Augustus, when the Roman settlement of Quarto was founded. A Lombard town succeeded it, and at the end of the tenth century Otto I mdae this an outpost of the Holy Roman Empire. Frederick II, a later german emperor, was the one who gave the town its landmark fortress, and the imperial connection brougth to the name "San Miniato dei Tedeschi". Today San Miniato is a little agricultural town, an ideal break during your sightseeing tour all around Tuscany.
What to see and What to do in San Miniato, Italy
The village of San Miniato is split in two parts: San Miniato Basso, the main and modern part of the town situated down in the valley, and San Miniato Alto, the old quarter. To reach the top of the hill from San Miniato Basso, where trains coming from Pisa and Florence stop, there is a steep four kilometers climb. However, a minibus service leads passenger from the train station up to San Miniato Alto approximately every half an hour.
